Identity Theft Insurance may not be something that springs to mind as a necessity to the every day citizen. The threat itself is commonly thought of as something that is out there but like many things you only ever see it on the television. How wrong the people that assume that are!
The threat of identity theft has become extremely prominent in recent times. There are Identity Theft Insurance policies available to help negate the threat but also there are some basic preventative methods that can be taken by everyone to ensure that they are as protected as they can be themselves.
Well first let's just be clear what identity theft actually is. Identity theft is when somebody uses our personal details such as our name, date of birth and address without us knowing to pose as us. They can get credit cards, loans, change our details on existing accounts, get a passport, buy things, if you think hard about it the possibilities are huge here. This is of no cost to them but ultimately a huge and damaging cost to us financially and also potentially to our credit rating. Make no mistake if it happens to you then you have to foot the bill!
The first and foremost thing to help the fight against identity theft is vigilance! If we are aware of how fraudsters obtain out personal details without us knowing then we can take the relevant simple measures to stop this from happening way before they even try to it.
I have listed below some of the sneaky ways that criminals obtain out personal details:
- Loss or theft of your purse, wallet or handbag - It is not just the cash in your possession that is of interest to criminals. By taking your purse, wallet or handbag a fraudster can use the personal details on your drivers license or from any other paperwork or ID you have on you.
- Throwing your mail or other documents in the trash - Fraudsters have no problem sifting through your trash can to pick out any bank statements, utility bills and other documents that you may throw away which have your personal details on. Never has there been more of a reason to buy a shredder!
- Robbery - Criminals may be more interested in any documents you have around the home with your personal details or banking information on than in your wide screen television. With the relevant information they can pose as you and get a loan or credit card and buy themselves 10 wide screen televisions!
- Phishing - Not a spelling mistake and there is no rod involved! However it is though of as a form of angling. Fraudsters send out fake emails and make phone calls to people posing as larger banks and organizations that the people may be associated with asking them to confirm personal details. This can also involve links to fraudsters cleverly set up websites where any details you put in go straight to them. Most people will see through this but sometimes people bite and the fraudsters feel them in just like fish. Always be suspicious of anybody asking for your details. If they are the real thing they will understand your questioning and do all they can to prove they are the real thing!
- Card cloning - This is one thing that you see and hear a lot of on television. Fake ATM machines or card processors at stores or bars. The fraudster can clone your card details the moment the card is put into one of these machines! Be very careful of any machines that look suspicious or are stand alone machines.
- Internet spyware - If you don't have sufficient protection on your laptop or computer rogue viruses can plant spyware on them. Fraudsters use spyware to steal personal details and passwords. They can see everything you type in online and can take control of any online accounts that you have!
Just by becoming aware of the above measures used by fraudsters you can act with increased vigilance and stop them from taking your details. To be extra safe there are identity theft insurance policies that are cheap and easy to apply for online or via a financial adviser or broker.
