5 Ways to Save Money on Your Home and Auto Insurance

Insurance is the bill that none of us likes to pay every month, but unfortunately, is one of the most important bills that must be paid. In times like this when we are struggling through a difficult economy, people are always looking for ways to save money. Wouldn't it also be great if there was a way to save money on those pesky monthly insurance bills as well? Fortunately there are. Insurance companies both large and local offer ways to save money on your insurance bills as incentives to sign up for their business. So what are these ways to save money on insurance bills every month? They are not meant to be a big secret, and may be easier to achieve than you had imagined. Here are five ways to do so:

1. Let them know you are a professional. Insurance companies often offer discounts on auto insurance and such for certain professions such as lawyers, doctors, dentists, nurses, etc. The reasons for this are many, but primarily include the fact that insurance companies know that professionals such as these not only can bring in lots of money but are generally financially responsible as well. This is just the kind of client that these insurance companies would love to bring in and retain. These do so by automatically offering discounts on insurance. So it is worth asking an agent when purchasing new insurance if they offer discounts for your profession or not. If they don't, it may be worth looking elsewhere for insurance.

2. Purchase all of your lines of insurance through the same insurance company. It shouldn't be surprising but many people do not know that if they simply purchase and combine their insurance with a single insurance company, they will get discounts on their overall insurance. Insurance companies love it when clients do this and are willing to automatically apply the discount when a buyer does so. Insurance companies can call these packages by different names. Farmers insurance calls it the VIP, so be sure to ask about that if you are thinking of buying insurance from them.

3. Keep your driving record as pristine as possible. This little bit of advice is easier said than done sometimes, but keep in mind that having a pristine driving record can make a huge difference on your policy premiums. Many people may not realize this, but even one minor speeding ticket on your record can cause your monthly premium to jump up quite a bit. Additionally, since it takes generally three years for a ticket to come off of a driving record, you can be paying much more money over that three year period for just that one ticket than you were paying without it. If you do happen to get into a ticket or an accident, contact your insurance agent to discuss what options you have to try and keep your premiums low. Sometimes going to pesky driving school is worth the extra time and money to be able to keep your premiums lower for three years.

4. Purchase hybrid cars, or autos with added safety features. As an incentive to get consumers to purchase alternative fuel vehicles or vehicles with added safety features, insurance companies may offer discounts. It is in the best interest of an insurance company to insure a vehicle that will be safe to drive on the road and has additional safety features such as anti-lock brakes, which can help to reduce accidents and the number of claims that they may need to deal with. Purchasing these types of vehicles may also allow you to drive a safer car for a longer period of time which not only gives you peace of mind, but also cheaper premiums.

5. Becoming a good student. As if there wasn't already incentive enough to get good grades in school, good students can receive discounts on their insurance for achieving and maintaining their good grades. This can of course, give parents an additional reason to get on their children's' cases about keeping grades up! The fact is that if they or even a college student can qualify, the good student discount that most insurance companies offer can be instant savings that is an additional payoff for hard work in the classroom.

Be sure to ask the agents you speak with while shopping around for insurance about these and any other discounts on insurance that they may offer. It will be well worth your time to see what they have to offer and how you can instantly lower those pesky monthly insurance bills.
